Press Release | Fashion Evolved: A World of Plastics
Is our planet turning into “A World of Plastics”? Fashion Evolved: “A World of Plastics” is an exhibit where fashion designers, in recognition of the profound environmental impact the fashion industry has on our planet, become agents of change by creating showpieces made of recycled plastic. This event aims to raise awareness and inspire action towards a more sustainable fashion industry.
Curated by The UpCycle Project in partnership with Istituto Marangoni Miami as part of their ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation in fashion. The 2018 edition of Fashion Evolved: “A World of Plastics” invites established and emerging fashion designers to become agents of change by creating one-of-a-kind pieces made of upcycled plastic to raise awareness of the impact of single-use plastics on our environment.
The exhibit will take place at Instituto Marangoni in the Miami Design District from Monday, December 3rd until Saturday, December 8th, 2017. An exclusive “First Look” cocktail reception, a rare opportunity to get a sneak peek at the exhibit, will be held Monday, December 3rd, 2018 from 6pm to 8pm. The event will bring together a select group of fashion designers, art collectors, fashion enthusiasts, international influencers, and the media. Fashion Evolved: “A World of Plastics” unites seven internationally known designers including, Angel Sanchez, Martine Jarlgaard, Oscar Carvallo, Irma Martinez, Viviana Gabeiras, and the House of Fluff, to become advocates of sustainable fashion through an upscale exhibit that showcases their designs.
“Sustainability starts with the designer,” said Gabriella Smith, Sustainability Director of Istituto Marangoni. “The Fashion Evolved exhibit allows designers to explore their creativity to the fullest by working with upcycled plastic materials, plastic bottles, polyester, and other PVC derivatives. Through their creations, designers raise awareness on the impact of single-use plastics and become part of the global initiative to move toward sustainably sourced and ethically made clothes,” Smith explains.
To continue the conversation about the fashion industry’s impact on our planet, The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) has curated a panel discussion on ‘The Future of Technology in the Fashion Supply Chain.’ The panelists include Leo Bonnani of Source Map, Martine Jarlgaard, designer and creator of the blockchain case study for Provenance, Lanvy Nguyen of Fashion 4 Freedom, and Ariana Fowler, in charge of social impact for ConsenSys, moderated by Jim Warnock of the Human Rights Foundation.
The UpCycle Project is a platform that encourages creatives, designers, and students to rethink the wastage that is created by the fashion industry through re-using or ‘upcycling’ textiles and garments that would have otherwise gone to the landfill. Through exhibitions, fashion shows, and events, The UpCycle Project invites you, the audience, to experience sustainability & style in an exciting and fashion-forward context. Your presence and support are crucial to our mission to promote sustainability in the fashion industry.
